About Dental Crowns
To restore and protect cracked teeth, yellowing enamel, substantial decay, and more concerns, dental crowns go over the whole tooth. At DentalWorks - Durham in Durham, NC, crowns (also called caps) are sturdy, long-lasting covers that fit securely on top of the area of the tooth above the gumline for patients where dental decay is too big to be healed with a composite-resin filling or if the patient's tooth is cracked and requires a shield. Crowns may also be added to cover an off-color tooth as well as to increase the stability to a bridge. Crowns by our dentists at DentalWorks - Durham may be porcelain, ceramic, or metal, based on the placement of the crown. The less visible teeth generally need the added durability of metal, whereas the social teeth look more attractive with ceramic or porcelain crowns that are shaded to blend with the patient's natural teeth.
"I have been going to this dentist office since 2015. I am fairly new to Yelp and just read the reviews provided. My experiences with Faith, who is, hands down, the most thorough, gentle and sweetest person I have ever had that takes "pleasure" of deep-diving into my mouth with scary sharp objects to help me improve my overall health. ;-). She is simply an amazing person who makes you feel welcome and not "just a customer." Lisa is another Dental Hygienist whom I have also had the pleasure of her hygiene practice that I have also enjoyed (Despite her choice in Pro Football teams!). I have not had the negative experiences that others have had several years ago. Dr. Zhao is a wonderful dentist and I highly recommend them. I have had to have 2 Crowns during this time. Dental insurance is helpful but doesn't cover all the costs, however that isn't the dentist's fault! I have never been chastised nor belittled for my lack of knowledge of services offered. There isn't any "high-pressure" sales pitches... you can simply say "no, thank you!" And move forward with your life! The front office staff are friendly and helpful. If someone is tied up on the phone, someone else will quickly step up to help. It is a busy office and I have never felt like I was rushed. Dr. Zhao, Faith and Lisa spent quality time explaining the Who, what, when, where, how and why of my body's needs and explained the options and consequences. Simply an awesome place... well worth the money and visit!"- P.P. / Yelp / Dec 21, 2017
"I have been to this office four times now, and each time I experience a pleasant, smooth appointment process, something I have not experienced at other dental offices. The first time I came in, I had an infected wisdom tooth that needed to be pulled. They went ahead and gave me antibiotics and a mouthwash to use while the infection cleared up, took bitewings, and had me come back to get both wisdom teeth on the top out. The oral surgeon (can't remember his name but he was very nice) had both teeth out in just a few minutes, explained everything to me very thoroughly, and listened when I told him that I need more Novocaine than most people as I am a natural redhead and therefore more resistant to anesthesia. At the time of my wisdom teeth being removed, they told me that I needed a list of cleanings and fillings as I had not been to the dentist in a long time, but that I could schedule them at my convenience, when I could afford to come back.Last week, I broke a tooth and came in to have an exam done. They told me I needed a cleaning on that quadrant of my mouth before they could fill the cavity and broken area, and scheduled me. The hygienist was kind, gentle, and patient, and very thorough. She told me I would probably need to take Tylenol or Ibuprofen following my appointment for a day or so while my gums recovered from the scaling and root planing. I went back in yesterday to have the tooth filled and Dr. Legler was great, he remembered me from the previous cleaning visit when I said I needed extra numbing, without me saying it out loud. When I did feel pain during the procedure, he offered me the option to keep going or get numbed again- I tried to brave it one more time but the second time I raised my hand he went ahead and numbed me more and was very kind and patient about having to stop his procedure halfway through to make me more comfortable. Until I have a reason not to I will continue to come to this dental office! I've had nothing but good experiences here, the staff are always great and even though I hate dental appointments I always leave feeling like I worked myself up for nothing because they make it so easy."- A.K. / Google / Nov 27, 2017

"I can't say enough about this practice. I was ten minutes late for my appointment and everyone was totally understanding. I wish I knew my hygienist's name. She is such a kind person and gave me such an outstanding cleaning. Dr. Zhao is wonderful and personable. This practice really knows how to take care of their patients. Thank you!"- M.M. / Facebook / Nov 08, 2017
"Myself and three of my sons go to dental works for orthodontic care. The staff is always warm and friendly. And although we have had different orthodontist over the coarse of care they have all been top notch"- J.S. / Google / Nov 06, 2017
What to Expect
To craft a customized crown, our dentists initially prep the tooth by taking off a slim layer of enamel before taking dental X-rays and physical impressions of the tooth that will be delivered to a dental lab. A temporary cap will be placed over the tooth while the custom crown is being created. Once the custom crown is returned to DentalWorks - Durham in Durham, NC, our dentists will expertly set and fit the crown over the tooth. Our dentists can modify the cap for the most comfortable fit.
Some patients can have short-term soreness or heightened tooth sensitivity, however for the most part patients don't experience any discomfort once the cap is in place. With correct at-home care and recommended dental exams and cleanings, a dental crown can remain in place for at least ten years, based on the placement and material of the cap. It is possible that an infection or cavity can grow in the tooth under the crown, which usually requires a root canal therapy or another procedure.
When the dental crown is deemed necessary for the patient's health, dental insurance policies will usually pay part or most of the expenses, so our office staff at DentalWorks - Durham in Durham, NC will consult with the insurance company to calculate their coverage as well as the patient's personal expenses. Estimated expenses, payment methods, and financing options are accepted in our office in Durham, NC and can be explained at the patient's consultation with our dentists.
